Learning to Read at King Edward

Eileen Rygus
Principal
King Edward Elementary School

Every morning, in every classroom, you will find students at KEE pouring over books.  Teaching students to read and enjoy books is a priority for every teacher at our school.  You will find “Word Walls” in all classes, and all Language Arts instruction begins with a few minutes of “word work” involving those words.

The skills students learn during those few minutes are applied during guided reading, which also happens in all classrooms.  A small group of students will read a book with their teacher that is at their particular level.  During this time, teachers give individual help to students as they work their way through a new story.  When students are presented with a book that is at their instructional level, reading becomes interesting, enjoyable, and fun!
